What is opal?

  • Opal is a mineraloid, which means it is not a true mineral but has similar properties to minerals. It consists of hydrated silica spheres that form a three-dimensional structure. Furthermore, the term “opals” originates from the Greek word “opallios,” which means “to see a change in color.” This name reflects the gemstone’s ability to showcase a play of color.
  • Opal is famous for its play of colors, also known as opalescence. It exhibits a stunning array of colors that change and shift as the stone is viewed from different angles. The diffraction and interference of light cause the play of colors as it passes through the silica spheres.
  • There are several types of opal, including precious opal, fire opal, and common opal. Precious opal is the most valuable and sought-after variety due to its vibrant play of colors. Fire opal is transparent to translucent and displays warm hues of red, orange, and yellow. Common opal lacks play of colors and is often opaque or translucent with a single color.
  • Australia is the most significant producer of opal. Besides, other notable sources include Ethiopia, Mexico, Brazil, and the United States mine opal.

Lore and legend about Opals

  •  The ancient Greeks believed that opals formed from the tears of joy wept by Zeus when he defeated the Titans. They considered opal a symbol of purity and believed it possessed the power of foresight and prophecy.
  • The Romans associated opal with good luck and believed it symbolized hope and purity. They not only believed opal could bring about fidelity and protect against diseases but also considered it as a symbol of love.
  • In Arab folklore, people believed opals fell from the sky during lightning storms. They considered opal a symbol of hope and thought it could grant invisibility to its owners.
  • The indigenous people of Australia, the Aboriginals, have their own legends surrounding opals. According to their Dreamtime stories, their ancestors created opals by walking on the rainbow as a bridge between the spirit world and the Earth. Therefore, people considered opals sacred and believed they could bring both spiritual and physical healing.
  • Opals have also been associated with superstitions and misconceptions. In the Middle Ages, people believed opals brought bad luck and considered them an “unlucky” gemstone. However, this perception changed over time, and opals regained their popularity and positive reputation.

The symbolism and significance of Opal

  • Hope: The play of colors within the opal represents optimism and positivity, inspiring a belief in brighter days and fostering a positive mindset. Wearing opal can be a constant reminder to stay hopeful and embrace a positive outlook on life.
  • Purity: Opal’s radiant appearance often draws comparisons to the purest form of light. It symbolizes truth, sincerity, and untarnished intentions. Wearing opal can represent one’s commitment to maintaining a pure heart and embracing honesty in relationships and actions.
  • Love: Opal enhances emotional connections and deepens intimacy. It fosters love and passion in relationships, helping to create stronger bonds between individuals. Wearing opal can evoke feelings of joy, harmony, and deep emotional connection, serving as a reminder to cherish and nurture love in all its forms.
  • Good Luck: People believe that opal brings good luck and fortune. They think that opal attracts positive energies and repels negativity. When someone wears an opal as a talisman, it represents an invitation for good luck and positive outcomes in their life. It also serves as a symbol of optimism and a belief in the power of positive energy.
  • Anniversary: Furthermore, opal is considered the 14th wedding anniversary gemstone. Couples often choose opal as a meaningful gift to celebrate their 14th wedding anniversary, as it symbolizes love, hope, and happiness in a marriage.
