What is sapphire?

  • It is a variety of the mineral corundum, it is typically blue. But “fancy” sapphires also occur in yellow, purple, orange, and green colors. Its main component is Al2O3 and the color comes from iron (Fe) and titanium(Ti).
  • The word sapphire is derived from the Latin word “sappheiros.” It means to cherish the Saturn, and it originally meant lapis lazuli and other opaque blue minerals.
  • The world-famous origins of high-quality sapphire are Myanmar and Sri Lanka. Furthermore, the best sapphire “Kashmir Sapphire” is cornflower blue, mainly found in India.
